Say Goodbye to Resolutions: Shape Your New Year with One Magical Word

Choose One Word to Shape Your Year

There’s something undeniably motivating about the start of a new year. It’s a fresh canvas, brimming with possibilities and the promise to be and do better than before. Millions of people embrace the annual ritual of setting New Year’s resolutions. We’re hopeful and excited as we list out our ambitious goals designed to change our lives.

But then, we watch in bewilderment and frustration as those goals sink into a black hole, never to be seen again—until next year. Sound familiar? Research shows that over 40% of people abandon their resolutions by the end of January, and less than 10% see them through. If this resonates with you, it’s time to ditch the list of resolutions and embrace a more sustainable and powerful approach.

Why One Word Works

Instead of a laundry list of goals, choose just One Word for the year—a word that clarifies your focus, sustains your intentions, and guides your actions for all 365 days. Unlike resolutions, this practice centers on who you want to become rather than what you want to overcome.

The One Word concept gained popularity through the book One Word That Will Change Your Life. I first encountered it several years ago at a Coaching Association meeting. While intrigued, I hastily chose a word that didn’t truly align with me. The following year, I engaged in the three-step process and selected the word “Courageous.” That’s when I experienced the almost magical, transformative power of this practice.

That word pushed me out of my comfort zones and led me to take bold steps I might have otherwise avoided—like stepping into a leadership role as a Board of Directors member, saying yes to speaking engagements, and diving into highly visible opportunities. Even though it was scary at times, that single word changed my trajectory.

For 2025, I’m recommitting to this practice with the word “Transform.” This word embodies my dedication to meaningful change across all areas of my life—business and personal—on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. It reflects my intention to view life as a mystical adventure, connect with my higher future self for guidance, elevate how I serve my clients, and deepen my contributions to the world. “Transform” reminds me to embrace growth, seek creative solutions, and inspire others to embark on their own transformative journeys.

The Three-Step Process to Find Your Word

Choosing One Word works because it simplifies your focus. Instead of juggling multiple goals, you’re guided by a single intention that shapes your decisions and actions. This approach is rooted in to-be goals, where success is measured by who you become, rather than to-do goals, which focus solely on accomplishments.

Step 1: Prepare Your Heart (Look In)

Take time to reflect and quiet your mind. Ask yourself these questions:

  • What do I need? What areas of your life need the most change? Focus on your true needs, not just your wants.
  • What’s in my way? Identify barriers, whether external or internal, that are holding you back.
  • What needs to go? Let go of past mistakes, pain, or anger that may be preventing your growth.

Step 2: Discover Your Word (Look Up)

Connect with your highest self to receive your word. Allow yourself time to reflect and explore different possibilities. If multiple words resonate, test them out. Choose the one that deeply aligns with your intentions and write it down.

Step 3: Live Your Word (Look Out)

Integrate your word into your daily life. Here’s how:

  • Display it prominently—on your desk, as your phone background, or on a piece of jewelry.
  • Share it with your trusted inner circle for accountability and support.
  • Use it as a compass for decision-making, especially during challenges.

Examples of Words to Inspire You

If you’re unsure where to start, here are some examples:

Awake, Passion, Inspire, Positive, Wisdom, Kindness, Adventure, Love, Strong, Guide, Lead, Bold, Thankful, Courageous, Present, Brave, Visionary, Powerful, Joyful, Peace, Compassion, Caring, Connector, Influence, Action, Shine, Release, Empowered, Enjoy, Health, Growth, Commitment, Simplify, Focus, Purpose.

Pick a word that resonates deeply with your heart and intentions. It’s not about finding the “perfect” word but choosing one that feels meaningful and motivating.

This process has been powerful for me, and honestly, no one is more surprised than I am! I’m convinced—this works. How about you? Would it be worth a try?
